Off-duty paramedic to the rescue after car and lorry crash on A49 in Shropshire
A paramedic on his way to work for his night shift stopped to help an injured driver when he came across a crash between a lorry and a convertible car in Shropshire.
The driver of the car had suffered a head injury in the crash near the railway crossing on the A49 at Leebotwood, yesterday.
The paramedic was first at the scene of the collision. He is also a medical first responder, which means he carries his response bag with him and gets called out to incidents as a paramedic when he is off shift.
West Midlands Ambulance Service's control room also got a 999 call at 6.15pm.
The road was closed between the Dobbies roundabout on the outskirts of Shrewsbury and the junction with the B4370 at Marshbrook, south of Church Stretton.
Joining the paramedic at the scene were an ambulance crew and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford. The victim was freed by firefighters.
A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "The car had left the road and was very badly damaged. The medical first responder found its driver, a man, injured at the wheel.
"Ambulance service personnel bandaged a head wound, gave him oxygen and immobilised him onto a scoop stretcher. He was taken by land ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.
"The lorry driver was uninjured."
