Calls for A5 safety improvements where Shropshire mother and daughter were killed
Calls have been made for safety improvements on the A5 close to Weston Park where a mother and daughter from Shropshire were killed in a five car crash this week.
Diane McGrail, 53, and Kira Elizabeth McGrail, 14, from the Oakley area of Market Drayton, died at the scene of the accident at Weston-under-Lizard on Monday afternoon.
They were passengers in a black Seat Ibiza and the 17-year-old male driver, also a member of the same family, remains in a critical but stable condition at the Royal Stoke University Hospital, Staffordshire Police said.
The Earl of Bradford, whose family used to own Weston Park, wants double white lines along the A5.
He said: "For years we campaigned to get double white lines through Weston-under-Lizard and the speed limit was set at 40mph.
"But it was crazy. They actually had signs saying no overtaking through the village but the white lines in the road tell people something different.
"It seems that there needs to be a co-ordinated approach."
Lord Bradford said he had offered land free of charge a number of years ago to build a bypass, but the A5 has since been downgraded from a trunk road.
A 46-year-old man from the Telford area was arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving after initially being taken to the Princess Royal Hospital in Telford for treatment after the accident, which happened at 2.20pm on Monday.
The man has been bailed, pending further police inquiries, to a later date.
A police investigation is under way and witnesses are asked to contact Staffordshire Police on 101, quoting incident 396 of July 6.
