Late-night shopping will be held in Oswestry this Christmas in a move to woo shoppers from bigger towns and cities.

Pop-up shops would be set up to allow traders based outside the town centre to get the full benefit. Local schools and performing arts groups could be invited to provide entertainment for the night.

The late-night shopping idea has been put forward by Oswestry Chamber of Commerce and would run separately to the annual Christmas Live event, which features market stalls and a funfair.

The date pencilled in for the late-night shopping event is December 11, the Friday after Christmas Live.

Members of Oswestry Town Council supported the plan in principle at a meeting earlier this week. Councillor Peter Cherrington, mayor of Oswestry, said: "We certainly support the idea in theory.

"I think inviting those shops outside the centre of the town to have a stall in Cross Street or Bailey Street for the evening is a fantastic idea and will make everyone feel part of the event."

The town council has invested £90,000 over three years to lease new decorative lighting.

Jools Payne, chairman of Oswestry Chamber of Commerce, recently addressed the council.

She said"Oswestry Chamber of Commerce is in an exciting place at the present time with increasing membership and a very strong town centre forum being developed."
