Pick-up van driver, 64, killed as rain brings chaos to Shropshire roads
The driver of a truck killed in an accident on the A49 in Shropshire was a 64-year-old man, police have revealed.
The motorist was behind the wheel of a red Mitsubishi L200 pick-up van, which collided with a lorry at Leebotwood, near Church Stretton, in torrential rain on a stretch of road where there have been safety warnings. He was pronounced dead at the scene following the crash at 7.45am on Saturday.
There were also a number of accidents on the A5 near Shrewsbury in heavy rain.
Police have made an appeal for anyone who witnessed the Leebotwood crash to come forward.
The truck was travelling northbound when it collided with a Volvo lorry, whose driver was not hurt, which was moving in the opposite direction.
The A49 was closed in both directions while police carried out an investigation, which caused heavy tailbacks.
Anyone who saw the collision or either vehicle before the crash is asked to call West Mercia Police on 101 quoting incident number 169S of July 25.
Jean Evans, who has lived on the bend on the A49 for the last 30 years, said: "We have experienced numerous accidents. People drive so fast and there are no signs to warn of the bend."
The A49 was closed in both directions.
Four cars, one of them towing a caravan, were involved in accidents on the A5 in heavy rain yesterday. Two cars and a caravan were involved in a smash on the westbound carriageway near Edgebold at 2.30pm. Two hours earlier a car left the road near Bayston Hill.
The road was earlier closed between Dobbies Island and Edgebold Island as another car lost control.
Police put out an appeal asking motorists to slow down in the treacherous conditions.
