The 48-year-old victim was last night in a critical condition following an alleged serious assault.

Police were called to the Rose & Crown in Sunnyside Road, Ketley Bank, Telford. They found the man, who had suffered a serious head injury.

Officers taped off the pub for more than 20 hours and an investigation has been launched.

Detectives today appealed for witnesses. They said an argument broke out at the pub at about 7.40pm on Saturday.

The victim was subject to an alleged physical assault. After extensive treatment at the scene he was taken to North Staffordshire Hospital.

A number of people had made off from the scene by the time detectives arrived, but arrests were later made.

Inspector Helen Thomas, of West Mercia Police, said: "We are investigating an alleged serious assault and three people are being held in custody."

A 53-year-old man, a 46-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, all from Telford, were arrested on suspicion of causing grievous bodily harm in connection with the incident.

They were being questioned at Malinsgate Police Station.

Residents in the area told of their shock at finding their nearest pub taped off overnight and during Sunday.

John Payne, 36, of Ketley Bank, said: "It looked so serious because the pub was taped off completely.

"I'd heard that someone had been attacked but don't know why or who.

"It's not what you expect to happen and I just hope whoever was injured pulls through." A resident, who lives opposite the pub and did not wish to be named, said: "I'd heard that an argument had broken out at the pub on Saturday night and after that the police arrived.

"It seems to me that no argument was worth a man becoming seriously injured.

"I hope he is okay, I'm not sure who it is but it is a really close community around here.

"What's been most surprising is that the police taped it off and forensics have been seen coming in and out all weekend, so we all know it must be very serious."

The pub remained closed yesterday and was taped off last night with a police car stationed at the scene.

Forensic officers were inside the Rose & Crown looking for clues.

Anyone with information that can help police with their inquiries should call 101 quoting incident 674S of Saturday, July 25.
