Smoke could be seen pouring out of the barn across a field at Adbaston, close to the Shropshire border near Newport.

Firefighters also acted to stop it spreading to nearby woodland. About 25 firefighters from Staffordshire Fire Service were sent to the scene on Doley Road at about 11.45am last night.

They were joined by a further 16 from Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service at about 1.20pm. Crews remained on the site last night tackling the fire.

A spokesman for Staffordshire Fire Service, said the bailed hay at the barn was "well alight" during the afternoon.

The fire service also tweeted pictures of the blaze and efforts made by firefighters to contain it. It is not clear whether the fire was started deliberately or not at this point.
