Newport parking is set to be reviewed over school traffic

New parking restrictions could be introduced in a Shropshire town, partly because councillors received complaints about school traffic.

But police have warned that with the amount of development taking place in Newport, parking will continue to be a problem.

Telford & Wrekin Council is currently reviewing parking in the town and is consulting on a number of ideas. These include introducing no parking in Beaumaris Road, at the rear of Adams Grammar School, between 8am and 10am, and 2pm and 4pm. This comes after residents complained about the school's sixth form students parking there all day.

A section of double yellow lines in the High Street, outside Tempertons Estate Agents, could also be removed.

These lines were originally placed there when the site was occupied by Brown's Motors, but now that the business has closed and been replaced by the estate agency the double yellow lines are no longer required. They are set to be replaced by 40-minute parking bays.

Double yellow lines could also be introduced near the junction of Brookside Avenue and Wellington Road after residents complained about parents parking there when dropping off and picking up children from Moorfield School and Newport Girls' High School, blocking the junction to the estate.

A 20-minute waiting restriction is also set to be brought in outside the Spar shop and Post Office in the neighbouring village of Edgmond.

Councillor Angela McClements, Cabinet Member for Communities, Regeneration & Transport, said: "Each year we undertake a review of parking restrictions in each of the areas across the borough. We use any comments received from the public over the last 12 months, to work with the town council to put together the proposals.

"The current proposals for Newport are now out for consultation."
