People flocked to the Quarry in large numbers for the opening of the show today, despite driving rain for much of the day.

The show's headline act The Proclaimers will tomorrow night take to the stage, and organisers are confident the Scottish duo, who shot to fame in the 1980s with hits such as I'm Gonna Be could attract thousands of additional guests.

In a further boost for visitors, better weather was forecast for tomorrow including spells of bright sunshine.

Stephen Kynaston, chairman of Shropshire Horticultural Society which organises the annual two-day show, said: "We are confident that this year's show will break the 50,000 target.

"I know that there has been great interest in The Proclaimers appearance and news of this has been spread around on social media sites and also on fanpages. I think they will be a big draw tonight and I am really looking forward to seeing them. We are expecting record crowds."

Visitors started to flood into the Quarry from 9am yesterday where thousands of blooms, plants, vegetables and fruit were on show in packed marquees.

Other attractions include show jumping, marching bands and sheepdog trials, and the main arena was today being taken over by stunt riders, jousting and falconry displays.

The show has also attracted a number of celebrity guests including TV chef Tom Kerridge, gardening guru Pippa Greenwood, star of BBC's Gardener's Question Time and DIY expert Julia Kendall, star of DIY SOS.

Mr Kynaston said: "It really is a great show. There is something for everyone. And its success can be put down to the dozens of volunteers we have working here. Without them this show would not run as smoothly as it does.

"They put in a phenomenal amount of time and effort to ensure that the show is the huge success it is. Without them it would be impossible to stage. There is something special about giving your time and expertise to such a show."
