Seven men were arrested in the early-morning fight in Bridge Street yesterday. Those involved were from six different areas of the country, ranging from Blackpool to Salisbury, as well as two from Shrewsbury.

Detectives say they are investigating how the men came to be together and why the brawl started.

The men were taken into custody after West Mercia Police responded to reports of a "physical altercation between two groups of men" at 12.45am.

Today police appealed for help from anyone with information.

One man, in his 20s, was knocked unconscious during the fight, and was taken to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital for treatment.

Police spokesman Connie Osborne said: "We were called at about 12.45am to Lower Claremont Bank to reports of a physical altercation between two groups of men."

Ms Osborne said the men arrested included a 23-year-old from Salisbury, a 21-year-old from Rochdale, a 32-year-old from Blackpool, a 26-year-old from Kent, and a 24-year-old from Hampshire.

Two 25-year-old men from Shrewsbury were also arrested.

Ms Osborn added: "It is still unclear how the incident began but it is believed to be about the men involved.

"During the altercation one man in his 20s was knocked unconscious and was treated at Royal Shrewsbury Hospital."

It was confirmed that all seven men had subsequently been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, and were in the process of being questioned about the incident.

Jamie Arrowsmith of West Midlands Ambulance Service, confirmed they had also attended the incident to provide treatment at the request of police at 12.46am.
