Fire crews and an air ambulance were called to Green Moors in Lightmoor, Telford, at about 11.05am today when a fire broke out in a bedroom.

The girl – who is believed to be aged between nine and 10 years old– suffered serious burns to her face, arms, hands and legs.

Three crews from Telford Central and Tweedale were sent to the home and the fire was out on arrival of the fire service.

An ambulance, a paramedic officer and the Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford also attended the scene.

John Hawker, a West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "Crews arrived to find a girl who was out of the house that had suffered serious injuries. It is believe the fire happened in a bedroom.

"The girl, believed to be 9 years old, had suffered serious burns to her face, arms, hands and legs.

"She immediately received emergency treatment by medics at the scene and her condition was stabilised.

"Following treatment, the girl was airlifted to Birmingham Children's Hospital for further emergency treatment. The hospital had been pre alerted to the girl's arrival and her serious injuries.

"No one else was injured in the fire.

"The young girl's mum travelled with her in the Air Ambulance to hospital."

Richard Groom, crew manager at Telford fire station, said: "All of the occupants were out of the property and they had been alerted to the fire by a smoke alarm which was operated.

"One young girl, who was aged 10, was taken to hospital by air ambulance. She suffered burns from an accidental bedroom fire.

"She was being treated by neighbours when we arrived and we took over before the ambulance staff got there."

The fire crews returned to the area later in the day to raise awareness of the need of smoke alarms in homes and to check they were working and fitted.

The Red Cross Fire Emergency Support Service had also attended the incident to give support to the family.

Fire crews left were off the scene by 11.30am.
