Mr Corbyn, who grew up in Newport and attended Adams' Grammar School, said he would climb to the top on May Day to fly the flag.

He said: "I grew up in Shropshire, I worked on farms and factories and warehouses and things in Shropshire.

"I was a very active secretary of the Wrekin Young Socialists and we used to love climbing up The Wrekin and putting a red flag up on May Day."

Mr Corbyn was born in Wiltshire, before he moved to the county aged seven. He first attended Newport's fee-paying Castle House School before moving on to Adams, where by his own admission he was "not a very good student".
