Visitors to Ironbridge could also walk through tunnels either side of the bridge, which were lit up with LED lights in a range of colours.

The event was part of a national celebration organised by the Society of Light and Lighting, which illuminates a string of Unesco World Heritage sites across the country.

The aim is to mark the International Year of Light, which co-ordinates activities so that people of all ages and backgrounds can gain an appreciation of the central role of light in science and culture.
