Kalun Longman, aged 16, from Newtown, was involved in a crash with a van on the A483 at Llanymynech bridge at 8.10am.

Dyfed-Powys Police spokeswoman Siân George said: "At approximately 8.10am police were made aware of a two-vehicle road traffic collision on the A483 Welshpool to Llanymynech road. The two vehicles were a motorcycle and a transit van.

"Sadly, the male moped rider sustained fatal injuries."

Miss George said Kalun was from Newtown.

Wales Ambulance Service sent two emergency ambulances to the scene, and the Wales Air Ambulance which is based at Welshpool.

Two fire crews from Welshpool attended the crash but were not needed.

The A483 was closed for seven hours between Llanymynech and Four Crosses after the crash.

Councillor Dilys Gaskill, from Llanymynech and Pant Parish Council, said her sympathies were with Kalun's family.

She said: "It's really tragic, and it's not just the boy who died but it's his family and everybody who knew him who are effected, as well as the other driver involved in the crash.

"There have been people killed on this road before, but not for a very long time. It's a tragic day."

Meanwhile, pupils from Llanfyllin High School were offered support after their school bus was "very close" to the accident.

While the LF65 school bus was not involved in the incident, it was stuck in the traffic trying to pick up the children to take them to school.

A statement released by the school said: "The Four Crosses/Llanymynech LF65 bus was very close to a fatal road traffic accident this morning. Whilst no students were directly involved, many of the students have been and may continue to be effected by what they witnessed.

"We will be contacting all parents of students that were on the bus today and will continue to provide whatever support may be necessary."

The school added that the headteacher made his way to the bus after the crash to make sure the children were alright.

Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to contact Dyfed-Powys Police on 101.
