Drains cleaned to tackle Newport street floods

Severn Trent workers have cleared the drains on a Newport housing estate which has a problem with flooding.

The entrance to Waterside Mews floods every time there is heavy rainfall, with water coming up through the sewerage pipes.

The entrance to the estate, near the canal, can see floodwater covering the kerbs.

Last week Severn Trent staff were out clearing the drains to reduce the flooding problem.

But spokeswoman Rebecca Murphy said the problem showed how people were putting the wrong items into drains, such as nappies.

She said: "In the past the pipes have blocked up, which has caused sewer flooding for local residents, so we're acting now to prevent it from happening again in the future.

"Sewer flooding is one of the most horrible things that can happen to our customers and it's completely preventable."

"Many of the blockages that we clear are caused by a build up of sanitary products such as nappies, face wipes and cotton buds.

"We also advise local residents to wipe out any greasy pans with kitchen roll, and then put it in the bin and to pour large amounts of left over cooking grease into a pot or jar with a lid because fats, oils and greases can also contribute to the problem."
