Shropshire Council stalwart stepping down

Mike Owen, Shropshire councillor for the Meole division in Shrewsbury and cabinet member for resources, finance and support, announced on Friday he was standing down.

Thanking Shropshire residents for their support during his time as councillor, Mr Owen said: "I have seen many changes in our county over the years and know that all the decisions we've taken have been to help our beautiful county reach its potential.

"I'd like to thank the Shropshire people who allowed me to serve and support them over the years, and feel that the time is now right for me to step down from this demanding position and spend some time with my wife and family."

Mr Owen will be succeeded by Much Wenlock councillor David Turner.

He wished Councillor Turner well in his new post.

"I know that David will do a superb job as portfolio holder and I wish him all the best in the role," said Mr Owen.

"I will continue to keep a firm eye on the work of the council, and fully support the work the councillors and staff are doing to make Shropshire great for our generation and those that follow in our footsteps."

Mr Owen had been a member of Shropshire Council since its inception in 2009 and was a Shropshire County Councillor for many years beforehand, bringing in numerous changes throughout the years, including ensuring the council's financial management and systems were "cutting edge" in the local government environment.

Council leader Keith Barrow said Mr Owen was a key decision marker in the council's cabinet and will be "greatly missed".

He said: "Mike has given many years to the county and has been instrumental in bringing our council through some of the most challenging times in history.

"He has carried out his role with tremendous diligence and worked incredibly hard. His compassionate approach to getting the job done will be very sorely missed amongst members and staff alike, and I wish him and his wife, Kathy many happy years, enjoying their growing family. It has been an absolute pleasure and honour working alongside him.

"I have asked councillor David Turner to support me in the cabinet role of resources, finance and support, and know that he will continue with the exemplary work that Mike carried out."

Celebrating the service of his predecessor, Councillor David Turner said: "I am delighted to support Shropshire Council's Cabinet in this crucial role and know that I have a robust and well-managed portfolio to take over from Mike. He has worked incredibly hard for Shropshire people and I aspire to continue his work throughout my term as Cabinet member," he said.
