It is thought the elderly man may have fallen ill at the wheel before the collision. His injuries are not yet known.

The crash happened on the A5 south of Oswestry, close to the British Ironworks complex at Aston, just before 5pm on Thursday.

Firefighters from Oswestry and Ellesmere were joined by the specialist rescue tender crew from Wellington. They worked in conjunction with paramedics from West Midlands Ambulance to cut the man free from the wreckage.

He was taken to hospital by ambulance.

The accident closed the busy trunk road for several hours as emergency services dealt with the incident and the road was cleared of wreckage.

Original diversions through country lanes were closed when a lorry broke down on one of the lanes. Traffic then faced diversions through Queens Head and Whittington or Maesbury.

Sergeant Lee Johnson criticised drivers who tried to drive through the police road block saying it was obvious that the road had been shut.
