People can visit to see the lecture theatre, seminar rooms, labs, business lounge, library, IT suites, stop. @ucs coffee shop, reception area, common rooms and offices.

An evening drop-in centre will be held next week and staff will be on hand for a chat.

Academics and support staff will be on hand at Guildhall, Frankwell Quay, between 6pm and 7.30pm on Tuesday.

Preparations have been ongoing for the university over the past 18 months, with the refurbishment of Mardol House as student halls, and the Guildhall at Frankwell Quay as the main teaching centre.

The arrival of 40 new students in September – the first to join the university from the outset – was hailed a huge step for Shrewsbury as a town, with an expected economic boom, along with the prestige associated with the fledgeling university.

The drop-in evening also provides the chance to ask any questions about the overall development of the institution, public events, courses, or any other topic people would like to discuss.

Education chiefs today praised the base at Guildhall and urged residents and anyone interested to visit.

University Centre Shrewsbury Provost Anna Sutton said: "Residents, people interested in studying with us, members of community groups, business representatives, and anyone else interested in the University Centre is invited to come along to tour Guildhall, meet the team, share ideas and ask any questions.

"Guildhall is a great base for students – but it's not just students involved in activities here.

"Energize Shropshire, Telford & Wrekin – the county sports partnership is based at the building, partner organisations such as the Shropshire Business Board have met here and a range of public events are taking place."

The event is the second drop-in to be held in recent weeks, the first took place on November 17.

Forthcoming public events at Guildhall include a free reading group on Charles Dickens' A Christmas Carol on December 19 from 1.30pm to 3.30pm. To book email Dr Jude Piesse at j.piesse@chester.ac.uk

Events are also being planned for Rowley's House and other locations in the town.

Light refreshments will be provided at the drop-in and reading group events
