Travellers pitch up near M54 service station in Shropshire

Travellers have pitched up with caravans and horses on land close to a Shropshire motorway service station.

Traditional horse-drawn wagons appeared on land close to the Welcome Break Services of Junction 4 of the M54, near Shifnal.

The travellers have been staying illegally on the site since the weekend.

Maria Jones, spokesman for Shropshire Council, said: "We have been made aware, the gipsy liason officer has been out to see them and they have been served notice to quite the premises."

The site is chosen regularly by travellers, and there has previously been some confusion over the ownership of the land, with neither Shropshire Council nor Highways England taking responsibility for the ownership of it.

A group of travellers last pitched up on the land in January, and the site was also occupied in May and August last year.

Shropshire Council highways officers had ploughed up bits of the verge in an attempt to stop caravans returning – though it appears not to have worked.
