A stretch of the M54 will be closed completely over the weekend for further repairs to damaged concrete slabs.

The eastbound carriageway will be closed between Junction 3 for Albrighton and Junction 2 for Wolverhampton from tonight and will not reopen until Monday morning at the earliest. Bad weather over the weekend could lead to repairs running into next week, according to Highways England.

Drivers using the motorway over the weekend are being warned to expect delays and allow extra time for their journeys.

Diversions will be put in place via the A41 and A5.

Closures on the motorway began late last month, and the eastbound section between the two junctions has been open this week with some lane closures in place.

Ian Askew, at Highways England, said: "We've been working all hours to try to get this fixed. Further investigations have found extensive wear to the road foundations. This means we have had to dig much deeper to get to the root cause and repair the road as necessary."
