Frankwell flood barriers back up as rivers rise around county

Flood barriers have been put back up in Shrewsbury as the River Severn continues to rise after a weekend of heavy rain.

The worst of the rain in Shropshire and Mid Wales has now passed, but the persistent torrential downpours seen on Friday and Saturday has put rivers close to breaking point in places.

Flood alerts remain in place for the River Severn and Upper Teme while severe flood warnings are still out for the River Vyrnwy at Maesbrook and Melverley.

Several roads are closed around Crew Green where the River Severn and River Melverley converge, while the Severn has burst its banks at Llandrinio, leading to the closure of the bridge.

Water has spilled onto some riverside paths in Shrewsbury, but the latest batch of bad weather is yet to cause any major disruption in the area and Frankwell car park remains open.

There are no longer any severe weather warnings in place for Shropshire or Mid Wales, with light rain, patches of fog and temperatures of between five and 10 degrees expected over the coming days.

A yellow warning for rain had been issued for the region on Friday.

The erection of the flood defences comes just five days after they were last taken down.

Meanwhile Scotland is bracing for further arctic weather with snow expected across much of the country.
