The crash took place at about 6.15am on the B4396 at Knockin, blocking the road at rush hour, with slow traffic in both directions at the junction with the B4398.

Four fire crews from Baschurch, Oswestry and Wellington were called to the scene to cut two people free from the wreckage who were then treated by ambulance crews before being taken to hospital.

Two ambulances, a paramedic area support officer in a rapid response vehicle and the MERIT trauma team attended. The Midlands Air Ambulance from Cosford landed on the illuminated helipad at the The Robert Jones and Agnes Hunt Orthopaedic Hospital in Oswestry because it was still too dark at the time to land at the scene.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "One of the drivers, a man in his twenties, was trapped in his car and had to be freed with the help of the fire service. He had numerous serious injuries. He was given advanced pain relief and was immobilised at the scene.

"He was then taken by land ambulance to the waiting air ambulance at Oswestry for the flight to Royal Stoke University Hospital for further treatment from its trauma team.

"The other driver, a woman in her thirties, had a suspected dislocated shoulder. She was given pain relief and a splint was applied. She was taken by land ambulance to Royal Shrewsbury Hospital."

PC Mark Booth said: "This would be a time when people would start to make their journeys to work and they may have witnessed the collision or saw the vehicles prior to the incident.

"I would urge anyone with any information to please call us on 101 quoting incident number 63S of 5 January."
