Under-fire Telford MP Lucy Allan secures care debate

Under-fire Telford MP Lucy Allan has secured a debate in the House of Commons on the rising numbers of children being taken into care.

It comes as she attempts to get back on track following what she described as a "difficult time" at the end of last year.

A former staff member last month lifted the lid on life working for Ms Allan as the MP faced threats of legal action from Labour councillors in Telford.

But since then she has pledged to continue to represent the town throughout 2016, in what she said would be a "fantastic year".

And the issues surrounding the rising numbers of children in care remain at the top of her agenda.

She said: "I have secured a debate in parliament on the rising numbers of children being taken into care.

"The voices of children in care and their families are seldom heard.

"This debate is on Thursday this week in the main chamber. Really pleased that Parliament will be focusing on this issue."

Ms Allan came under fire since publishing an e-mail on Facebook which she said was sent to her following her decision to vote in favour of air strikes on Syria in the Commons.

She was accused by "Rusty Shackleford", an alias of Adam Watling, son of Telford & Wrekin senior councillor Paul Watling, of faking a death threat by adding the words "unless you die" to the e-mail.

She said that was a "disgraceful slur" and said the post was a combination of two threatening e-mails she had received on the matter.

But calls were made for her to resign or be sacked and the hashtag #sacklucyallan trended briefly on Twitter.

Ms Allan deleted her social media accounts – only to make a brief return to publish a near 1,000-word post attacking a small group of Labour councillors in Telford and labelling them "bully boys".

Following this, Arianne Plumbly went public with voicemail messages sent to her by the Telford MP while she was signed off work sick with stress, spoke of her upset at the way she was treated. Ms Allan claimed she had apologised to an ex-staff member who accused her of bullying while she was signed off sick.
