The fire was confined to the kitchen of the house in Botfield Road, Shifnal.

The alarm was raised just after 5.30am by the young woman, who was checked over by ambulance staff at the scene.

A joint fire and police investigation into the blaze is now underway.

Two fire crews from Telford Central and Tweedale went to the home with four fighters wearing breathing apparatus going inside to put out the fire.

Shropshire Fire and Rescue incident commander, Pete Hawkins, said the fire involved a toaster and a kettle in the kitchen.

"The young woman occupant, who was in her 20s, was in bed and was woken by the sound of her smoke alarm," he said.

"Working smoke alarms do save lives. We urge people to ensure that their smoke alarms are working."

Mr Hawkins said a joint fire and police investigation had been launched.
