Blaze home near Oswestry still too dangerous to enter

The cause of a fire that ripped through the roof of a house is yet to be determined as experts say it is still too dangerous to get into the home.

More than 30 firefighters tackled the blaze which left a hole in the roof of a house in Woodland View, Trefonen, on Thursday.

But the cause is unlikely to be confirmed until early next week as Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) officers have been unable to get into the building after the roof collapsed.

While tackling the blaze, firefighters were forced to retreat from the burning house amid fears it would collapse.

Neighbours alerted emergency services after smoke was seen coming from the roof of the home.

A woman who lived inside the house got out of the blazing building unharmed after the fire broke out.

Today Peter Hawkins, rank station manager and assistant group commander for SFRS, confirmed the semi-detached property was still "structurally unsafe" meaning they were still unable to gain access into the house.

He said: "The cause of the fire is yet to be established as we still can't get access into the house as it's still structurally unsafe."

Mr Hawkins said structural engineers are likely to shore up the floor of the loft in the building. He confirmed the fire investigation officers were liaising with the householder to gather more information.

"I must state this is purely a fire investigation, there is no police investigation going on here," he said.

Firefighters remained at the scene throughout Thursday afternoon until 4.30pm, before returning hours later at 9pm for another inspection and to determine there were no hotspots remaining.

Mr Hawkins said the cause of the blaze was likely to be confirmed early next week.

On Thursday Mr Hawkins said it was thought the fire started in the roof space.

There was also substantial smoke damage to the adjoining property.

Police and the ambulance service were also in attendance to check over the woman.
