More than 250 tonnes of hay and straw was "well alight" by the time firefighters arrived at the scene in Horderley, near Craven Arms.

The fire started on Saturday afternoon and between 15 and 20 firefighters from Bishop's Castle, Bridgnorth, Church Stretton and Craven Arms were at the scene at its height. A crew from Shrewsbury remained at the scene on Sunday, while the fire burnt out.

The fire was in Horderley, near Craven Arms, and the fire service also supplied a water carrier to help put out the blaze.

Ben Gillespie, crew manager from Shrewsbury, said the cause of the fire was not yet known.

He said: "At first there were between 15 and 20 firefighters here trying to stop the blaze from spreading to other surrounding buildings.

"We have had three pumps in use at one point and we also used curtain spray to control the fire.

"Once we had the fire under control we just had to let it burn out, as well as making sure it did not spread."

"These types of fires are common in Shropshire as it is quite a rural county, but how many we tackle on a yearly basis I am not sure."

The crews left the scene late yesterday afternoon.
