Telford travellers' site plan meets objections

A site in Telford could be transformed into a pitch for travellers as a council plans to cut the amount of unauthorised encampments and avoid costly enforcement action.

Telford & Wrekin Council has lodged the plans for the site off Granville Road in Donnington Wood, Telford, which would provide 22 spaces for cars and 22 spaces for caravans.

There are currently two permanent authorised sites in the Telford & Wrekin borough situated at nearby Lodge Road, Donnington, and Ketley Brook in Lawley.

The authority wants to replace the temporary transit site at Snedshill, according to the proposals, which have already attracted objections from nearby residents.

A report, submitted with the plans, reads: "The site is set back from a quiet highway, located away from dwellings and is to be fully screened with CCTV and gated access.

"The site provides provision for 11 double pitches which allow space for two caravans and two cars.

"This development will help to reduce the number of unauthorised sites and the tensions they can create between travellers and the settled community and reduce the need for costly enforcement action."

The scheme has already attracted furious objections. Tracey Thomas, of Donnington, said: "The site they already have is surrounded by rubbish and old mattresses. They have no respect for our environment and not another penny should be spent on travellers."

Nik Abel, of Muxton, said: "This site is already large enough and doesn't warrant destroying large swathes of Granville country park."
