Fire crews have urged people to be careful of glass ornaments or mirrors that can refract light and start fires.

Owners of a home in Apley Drive in Wellington returned to their house just after 2pm on yesterday and smelled smoke.

They called Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service who saw a magnifying glass had been left pointing at a chair with light shining into it through a patio door.

It caused burns to the chair and fire crews said it was lucky it was not more serious.

A spokesman for Wellington Fire Station said: "Luckily the owners had returned home before serious damage was done.

"Beware of any glass ornaments or mirrors refracting sunlight which may cause a fire."
