Graham Pugh, of Market Drayton, was visiting St Leonard's Church in Woore to place flowers on the grave of his two brothers – Malcolm and Gordon.

But when he arrived, he became concerned as the three closest graves to his brothers were covered in soil and grass.

Church officials have said the soil was due to overspill from new graves and vowed to correct the problem as soon as possible.

"It looks a mess and was horrible to see," said Graham, 79. "There are three graves covered in soil. It is next to my brothers' graves and I am worried they will be covered up next.

"I go up about once a week and this has been going on for a few months now and seems to be getting worse.

"I hope it is sorted soon as it looks awful. A number of other people are concerned."

Sam Keeling, church warden, said he had sympathy with the family and said he had already taken actions to clear the soil.

He said: "I have been informed about the problems. It was reported to another church warden initially.

"I did inspect the graves last Sunday and found some overspill soil from newly dug graves had covered some existing graves.

"We have four more funerals coming up in the next week so I have told the grave diggers that this cannot happen again and needs to be sorted.

"We are very proud of our church yard and work hard to keep it looking good.

"It will be put right as soon as possible, hopefully in the next 10 days if not sooner, and the soil will be used elsewhere."
