Motorcyclist killed in Shropshire border fire engine crash is named

A man killed when his motorbike was involved in a crash with a fire engine near the Shropshire border has been named by police.

Simon Ireland, 47, from Gnosall in Staffordshire, died after his motorbike was in collision with a fire and rescue service vehicle on the B5405 at Ellenhall, near Eccleshall, at around midday on Saturday.

Despite the best efforts of paramedics, Mr Ireland was pronounced dead at the scene.

Mr Ireland's family today issued the following tribute to him: "Si was the most loving, caring husband and a complete gentleman. He loved his family deeply and had amazing friends.

"Si was extremely proud to have served in the Army. We will miss him incredibly but will hold him safe in our hearts forever."

The crash scene

The Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service vehicle was not responding to an emergency incident when the crash happened.

A fire service spokesperson said at the time: "We are sad to confirm that a fire appliance from Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service was involved in a road traffic collision with a motorcycle around midday on Saturday April 9 on the B5405 Ellenhall near Eccleshall.

"Despite the efforts of emergency services the male rider of the motorcycle was pronounced dead at the scene of the incident.

"Staffordshire Fire and Rescue Service would like to express our sincere condolences to the family of the motorcycle rider at this difficult time."

Any witnesses are being asked to call Staffordshire Police on 101 quoting incident 295 of April 9.
