Eight fire crews were sent to the industrial site on Harlescott Lane shortly after midnight when a fire began involving machinery inside the premises.

The blaze was in a production area of the plant and staff were today assessing the damage.

Fire crews from Albrighton, Baschurch, Clun, Craven Arms, Shrewsbury, Telford, Tweedale, Wellington and Wem were at the scene and spent five hours putting the flames out.

Firefighters used breathing apparatus, a CO2 extinguisher, a covering jet, hosereel jet, main jet and thermal imaging camera to tackle the fire.

Police were also at the scene and the West Midlands Ambulance Service Hazardous Area Response Team tweeted that it was on standby at the "large industrial fire".

Firefighters had been at the scene for about an hour when they requested ambulance support due to the complex nature of the incident and the use of breathing apparatus.

Initially an ambulance and a paramedic area support officer were sent and were later backed up by the Hazardous Area Response Team.

A West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman said: "All members of staff had been safely evacuated without incident, but ambulance staff remained on scene while the firefighters tackled the fire, which was in a restricted access area with the potential for chemicals to be involved.

"Ambulance staff were stood down at 4.45am after the blaze was safely brought under control."

Fire crews left the scene shortly after 5am and were returning later this morning for an follow-up inspection.
