Shadow proving elusive for Bridgnorth otter spotters

An otter has been causing a splash with photographers in Bridgnorth, who have been unable to get a really good shot of the elusive animal on camera.

Shadow, as it has been dubbed because of its shy nature, has been spotted climbing over the branches that have built up by the bridge in Low Town and swimming in the waters of the Severn.

Photographer Roger Littleover said he is desperate to try and catch a good photograph of the animal.

The 57-year-old, from Mill Street, said: "Last year there was a pair of them and they were very easy to spot.

"This one is a little bit more shy. I have called her Shadow because she keeps quite hidden.

"I have only managed one blurry shot of her and another of her swimming away."

Mr Littleover, who has been a keen photographer for around two years said that he has been keeping a camera slung over his shoulder in a bid to capture a shot of the otter.

UK otter numbers plummeted due to an increased use of pesticides but their numbers are beginning to rise again because of cleaner water and more fish to eat.

Mr Littleover said photographers from all over Bridgnorth are now determined to catch a photograph of the otter before it moves away again.

Otters are inquisitive, playful and intelligent, often appearing to take childlike enjoyment in sliding around on muddy banks or in snow. They live in holts around water edges and bubbles of air trapped in their fur give them a silvery appearance underwater.
