About 30 people were said to be left stuck yesterday afternoon when the ride stopped in the middle of a downpour.

One Twitter user Tombo added: "So being stuck mid air in the pouring rain on Galactica for 30 minutes was not pleasant."

Just after 3pm, Alton Towers tweeted that the ride was reopen.

An Alton Towers spokesman said: "On the afternoon of May 2, heavy rain obscured a sensor on Galactica which meant that the ride was automatically stopped.

"This is a standard safety feature on this ride and the ride was working exactly as it is designed to do. The health and safety of our guests is our number one priority and our team followed standard procedures to get the guests off as quickly and as safely as possible.

"The ride has re-opened."

The 20-metre high ride was formally known as Air and has been re-furnished for this season.

Last month the Smiler roller coaster at Alton Towers re-opened after being closed for nine months following a crash that left two teenagers needing leg amputations.

Several others were injured when their carriage slammed into a stationary one.
