More than 900 women lined up at the start of the race, and organisers hope it will have raised £65,000 towards the charity's efforts to cure cancer.

The race, which took place on a route around the picturesque park, was started by nine year old Lucy Leighton from Acton Burnell, who lost her father Graham Fowles to cancer in 2014 at the age of 43.

Lucy was joined by her mother Sarah Leighton, 42, and the youngster said she was "very pleased" to have been given the honour of starting tonight's event.

Amy Hall, Race for Life area event manager, said she was thrilled to see so many women turn out for the event, especially with cold weather and the threat of rain,

She said: "There are more than 900 women signed up which is a great amount. We are really, really pleased with the weather which has held off for us, it is a really good atmosphere everyone is really excited about being able to take part and kicking cancer's butt."

Miss Hall said that the race provided a great way for women to raise money and enjoy themselves.

She said: "I think it is one of our great ways of fundraising. You get a lot of ladies coming together for this and as it shows people just want to come together and take part. The atmosphere plays a great part."

Sarah Newey, 29, from Shrewsbury, took part in the race for the second time after losing both her mother and grandmother to cancer in 2014.

She said: "I ran 1,000 miles for Cancer Research last year to raise money and Race for Life formed part of that so I had to come back.

"It's a great event, the fact that its not really promoted as an actual race and it does not matter what ability you are, children can take part, people who have never run before, it is just a nice atmosphere to take part in."
