Smoke was billowing out of the popular multi-storey car park on Saturday as around fifteen firefighters battled the third-floor blaze.

Three fire crews from Telford Central and Wellington were sent to Southwater after the alarm was raised at around 12.30pm.

It is not yet known what caused the blaze, which was soon under control, but Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said three cars were involved.

Matt Deeming, one of the attendants at the car park, said the car park would remain closed until further notice.

He said: "The car park was vacated because of the fire, and it remains shut until further notice.

"We're currently trying to decide whether we can open as normal tomorrow because of course some work needs to be done such as light fittings need to be replaced."

Mr Deeming confirmed nobody had been injured as a result of the fire.

Black smoke damage could be seen on the side of the building from Northfield Street, where the three fire engines parked up while crews used one main hose jet and small apparatus to fight the fire.

Northfield Street and other roads around the 600-space car park were closed as a result of the blaze, while shoppers were left stranded and unable to return to their vehicles for a number of hours until the car park was safe.

Wellington fire station tweeted to warn drivers to expect delays around the town centre as a result of the incident.

The fire was under control within an hour and crews left the scene at around 1.40pm.

The cause of the blaze is currently under investigation.
