The idea has come from a meeting to discuss the recent months-long closure of Ludford Bridge in Ludlow, which had to be repaired after a lorry knocked a large hole in its side.

The closure that drew criticism from residents and traders over diversions put in place, with some claiming visitors to the town were being confused and discouraged by poor signposting, leading to a loss of trade in the critical spring tourism season.

Now Ludlow Town Council, Ludford Parish Council, Ludlow Chamber of Trade and Shropshire Council have agreed to work together to have a ready-made contingency plan in place in the case that any of the main routes into the town have to be closed.

Andy Boddington, Shropshire Councillor for Ludlow North, said there were only four main routes in and out of Ludlow, and if one was blocked to traffic it had the potential to cause chaos and congestion.
