The busy A5 Chirk bypass was shut in both directions between Halton Roundabout and Gledrid Roundabout after a car and a motorbike crashed shortly after 4pm on Sunday. It is not yet known if anyone was injured.
The road did not reopen again until around 8pm, causing gridlock on surrounding routes.
Drivers were forced to divert through Chirk town, instead of the closed stretch of road which runs between Chirk McDonalds and Moreton Park Garden Centre and is a popular route in and out of Shropshire to North Wales and the North West.
North Wales Police urged people to avoid the area and asked anybody who saw the accident to contact them on 101.
