Shrewsbury author Amy hits space hopper world record

Shrewsbury author Amy Turner has been crowned the fastest woman to travel a mile – on a space hopper.

Amy took on the challenge partly as a fundraising stunt and also as research for a novel she is writing.

And she trained at Shrewsbury High Prep School – where her children Monty and Dolly study – up to three times a week in the run up to her challenge.

Her novel sees the main protagonist aiming to become the fastest woman in the world to bounce a mile on a space hopper.

Amy decided to turn fiction into real life and take on the challenge herself.

The 38-year-old bounced into the record books with a time of 17 minutes 22.86 seconds – three minutes under her 20 minute target. She can officially claim the title once officials are happy with the submitted evidence.

She said: "When I applied, there was no women's record, so they set a challenging time to beat.

"I was really pleased with my time, but I could have done better as I did it in 16 minutes and 40 seconds in training.

"I don't think I'd pumped my hopper enough – that's not something I thought I'd ever be saying."

Amy's novel We Are All Made of Rubber is a contemporary young adult novel about sibling rivalry, space hopping and romance.

As the novel is pitched at 15 to 18 year olds, Amy used the hop as an opportunity to raise money for Young Minds, a charity supporting mental health and emotional wellbeing of children and young adults.
