Health and fitness club submits plans for 146-bedroom hotel in Shrewsbury
The owners of a Shrewsbury health club have submitted plans for a new on-site hotel.
Mosaic Spa, the owners of the Shrewsbury Club on Sundorne Road in Shrewsbury, has submitted an outline planning application to build a new 146-bedroom hotel on the site.
The application suggests the new hotel - which has been co-developed by Hilton Hotels - would be three or four storeys and built on land that is currently used for parking for the club.
The site is currently a health and tennis club with over 6,000 members, and the owners say it has a "growing reputation nationally for the provision of world tennis events".
The planning statement, submitted by Berrys on behalf of the organisation, states: "On the back of the club’s growth trajectory Mosaic has considered how to expand the core activities onsite and secure ongoing revenue generation.
"Initial consideration has been given optimising the wider site for development, with a number of complimentary usages including a yoga dome and hotel accommodation.
"Currently Shropshire attracts a large number of tourists (approximately 11.6 million per year of which 1.2 million are staying visits). The applicant considers there to be a real benefit in providing a hotel facility on the site to capitalise on the facilities offered directly through the club and the expanding offer through events it is now delivering.
"It is for these reasons that the provision of hotel facilities on site is considered both necessary and desirable to support the continuing development and profile of the Shrewsbury club as part of the wider visitor economy for the town."
According to the supporting letter from the Hilton Group, the hotel would operate with around 36 full-time employees.
Nick Smart, Hilton vice president for development in north and west Europe wrote: "Specifically, this co-location with the Shrewsbury Club is attractive to Hilton because it offers the opportunity to support events held at The Shrewsbury Club e.g. ITF World Tour, and it is well located through public transport connections to access Shrewsbury Town Centre to visit tourist attractions, local shopping and food and beverage premises."
