Hooves beat feet in annual Mid Wales race

A horse has beaten man for the seventh year running in the annual Man versus Horse Marathon in Britain's smallest town.

There was a great atmosphere in Llanwrtyd Wells, Powys, on Saturday as the unusual event drew hundreds of spectators to see the runners and riders put through their paces over 22 miles of rough terrain.

The winner of the marathon was Geoff Allen on Leo in two hours, 20 minutes and 46 seconds. Second was Ella Rich on Rabbit in two hours, 25 minutes and 40 seconds and third was Gabby Knigh on Sonic in two hours, 27 minutes and 45 seconds.

The first four entrants home were horses and riders with the first man being Hugh Aggleton, who completed the course in two hours 30 minutes and 35 seconds, just over 10 minutes behind the first horse.

The second man was Hywel Davies in two hours, 37 minutes and 28 seconds.

Lucie Custance was the first female in two hours 44 minutes and 55 seconds and she was 15 minutes clear of the second female, Rachel Chambers, who finished in two hours, 59 minutes and 47 seconds.

In the team race, Team Royal Marine A finished first and in sixth place overall in two hours, 36 minutes and 21 seconds with Team Royal Marines B in second place with two hours and 38 minutes and 54 seconds.
