Lorry fire causes M54 delays as lane closed
One lane of the M54 was shut after a lorry caught fire today.
The blaze caught hold on the recycling vehicle eastbound between Junction 1 at Featherstone and the link to the M6 at Junction 10A for Essington.
Firefighters called out to tackle the fire, which broke out at 4.45am, said the turbo on the engine of the lorry had blown leading to oil on the exhaust catching fire. Fallings Park Fire
Station watch commander Simon Hardiman said: "The driver had isolated the power before we arrived. We had to get the gritters out as we had been using water and didn't want it to ice up."
The inside lane was shut off to drivers for around an hour.
Meanwhile a car was burned out and 30ft of hedgerow set alight in south Shropshire.
Fire crews were called out at about 6.30pm last night to reports of a car on fire in a field at Spoonley Gate, Claverley. When they arrived they found a saloon car completely engulfed in flames about 30ft into a field.
The fire had also spread to the boundary hedge, and 10m of the hedgerow was alight.
Firefighters from Bridgnorth put out the blaze in 30 minutes.
