The fire, at Lower Cockshutt Farm near Chetton on the outskirts of Bridgnorth, is believed to have started accidentally in the car.

More than 30 firefighters from Bridgnorth, Much Wenlock, Craven Arms, Telford, Cleobury Mortimer and Clun were called shortly before 10.30am on Saturday. The farm is also home to engineering firm Millington Racing Engines.

Station manager Neil Griffiths of Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service said the barn measured about 150ft by 60ft and was used to store a large collection of agricultural vehicles, including tractors.

He said: "We believe the fire started in a car which was being stored in the barn.

"The fire took hold and spread to a number of other vehicles, causing damage to their tyres and fibreglass bodies."

Mr Griffiths said: "There was a danger of the fire spreading but the crews did an excellent job in stopping that from happening.

"We had reason to believe there was asbestos in the roof and so we took the precaution of getting the crews decontaminated and having their gear sent away for cleaning."
