A post mortem is due to take place today on the body of Mrs Tripp, who is thought to have lived in Telford for many years after moving from her home in the Philippine province of Cebu.

Forensic vans and officers were seen outside the property for much of yesterday as initial investigations began.

Neighbours spoke of their sadness at hearing about the death, and said the estate was a safe place to live.

One neighbour, who lives opposite the house, has lived there for 30 years. She said she witnessed the police arrive on Tuesday night, adding: "I was up looking through my window.

"The police were shouting through the letterbox. I can't believe something like this has happened.

"The police were in there for ages, nothing was going on and I saw lots of lights and police cars. There were about eight police cars and two riot vans and two ambulances.

"It was the police that woke me up shouting through the letterbox. We went to bed about 2.30am and when we woke up the police were still there, there was tape all over the front garden."

She added that she had seen a gentleman being escorted away from the scene by police.

Police have said they are still investigating the incident and have called on any witnesses to come forward. They have said they will remain on scene in the coming days.

Detective Inspector Mark Bellamy said: "We are in the very early stages of our inquiries and local residents may notice an increase in police presence as we conduct these."
