Search under way after report of person in River Severn in Shrewsbury

A search is under way in Shrewsbury after a report of a person in the River Severn.

Emergency services were called to the scene near Chester Street at around 4.40pm.

West Mercia Police said officers were responding to a report concerning the welfare of an individual who was believed to be seen in the river.

Officers are currently searching the river.

Firefighters have also joined the search by Shrewsbury Marine Services near the Frankwell car park.

One eye witness said there were lots of blue flashing lights at the scene and members of the emergency services were searching the riverbank with torches.

Inspector Ben Hembrey of West Mercia Police said: "We are doing everything we can to bottom out the sighting."
