The man has been named locally as Harry Gilbert, believed to be in his 80s.

Mr Gilbert is believed to be the only person living in the house, when the fire gutted the ground floor of his home in Benthall Lane in Broseley on Saturday afternoon.

DCI Matt Crisp, based at Shrewsbury Police Station, confirmed the man had died and said West Mercia Police and Shropshire Fire and Rescue Service were conducting a joint investigation on how the fire started.

He said the cause was not believed to be suspicious, and that enquiries were ongoing.

DCI Crisp said the man's next of kin had been informed and that formal identification was due to be taking place over the coming days.

A bunch of flowers has also been laid on the front lawn of the end terrace house.
