Woman's body found in River Severn near Ironbridge

The body of a woman in her 50s has been been found in the River Severn near Ironbridge.

Emergency crews including the air ambulance were called to Salthouse Road, near the Half Moon Inn, in Jackfield, shortly after 12.40pm on Wednesday after reports that someone had been spotted in the water.

West Midlands Ambulance Service spokesman Jamie Arrowsmith said: "The fire service managed to get to the patient in the water, but it became apparent that the person was deceased."

It is believed that the woman is from the area.

West Mercia Police spokesman Laura Maltby said: "At around 12.30pm yesterday police received a call from a concerned member of public reporting that a body had been seen in the River Severn close to the Half Moon Inn.

"Emergency services attended and the body of a woman in her 50s was recovered. The death is being treated as unexplained and a file is being prepared for the coroner."
