Letter: Fears of a fatal accident on dangerous stretch of road
I would draw your attention to a short stretch of road hidden by a wooded area. This is where Shrewsbury Road, travelling south out of Bomere Heath joins into Huffley Lane which eventually joins the A528 Shrewsbury to Ellesmere Road at the Shrewsbury Audi roundabout.
For a road which isn't even numbered, it is very heavy with traffic, seven days a week. It is used by many local motorists to travel to Shrewsbury, Harlescott and surrounding areas but mainly by cars and lorries as a short-cut from the A5 to the M54 and beyond.
You will be well aware of the many fatal accidents on Huffley Lane in recent years. This road carries a 60mph speed limit which in parts, is potentially dangerous. The road has an extremely poor surface in parts and as little or no kerbing and has very poor road markings.
The particular area in question from the Bomere Heath Cricket Club to the T-junction under the railway line is under trees, dark, with bends and a slight camber and the road surface has failed.
A micro-surfacing exercise has been carried out in the last 12 months but this soon deteriorated due to the nature of the road and its use. There are potholes in evidence. The short stretch of road in question is dangerous to cyclists, motorcyclists and other motorists and is damaging road users' property – and more, this is an area where accidents are waiting to happen.
The damaged road has been reported to Shropshire Council Highways Department who so far have put up two temporary road surface signs up.
Everybody understands that budgets are tight but I urge you to take action here before any fatal accidents occur on this road.
S T Brown, Shrewsbury
