Letter: Shock at Queen's beacon at Wrekin decision
I feel compelled to exclaim my disappointment at the decision taken by Telford & Wrekin Council not to have lit a beacon upon the historic site of the Wrekin to have signalled to the whole borough in celebration of the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II.
I find the council's official excuse pitiful, its suppositions that it does not own the land and the logistics of travel but superfluous to what is an obvious criticism of the council's administration.
This council, hardly famed for noetic ability has stupendously chosen to light a beacon that functionally cannot be seen outside of the Southwater Square! It is the visual equivalent of being as useful as a chocolate teapot!
I would offer an analogy to question whether the town's cryer was sent up The Wrekin instead to proclaim the royal celebration whereas no-one would ever hear the proclamation!
Whilst recognising the endeavour of the council to utilise the Southwater white elephant, I as many others are disinclined to pay the parking fees for such activities.
Politics aside the failure not to use both the tradition site of the Wrekin for the beacon lighting as well celebratory events at Southwater demonstrates a lack of respect for the whole community of the borough in recognition of this landmark for our Monarch.
Such opportunities rarely come and Telford & Wrekin Council has once again shown that it is not fit for purpose.
