MP Glyn Davies found himself being pulled up by police – after getting lost in roadworks in Telford.

The MP for Montgomeryshire was driving home from Parliament after the Brexit vote when he got confused after being diverted off the M54 in the early hours of yesterday because of late-night works.

He then found himself in the midst of a crop of roadworks and diversion signs in the town centre, unable to find his way back to the M54/A5 towards Shrewsbury.

The MP said the experience was like a bad dream.

"It was a nightmare," he said.

"I had been driving around for 30 minutes, becoming increasingly agitated and maybe erratic as I was studying every sign. I was becoming resigned to being stuck in Telford until the morning when I saw flashing blue lights.

"Police must have thought they had encountered a drunk driver."

Luckily, police came to the rescue and guided the MP out of the roadworks and on his way.

"After satisfying the police that I had had no drink at all and that I was who I said I was, officers guided me out of Telford and I was home by 2am."

Mr Davies said he would be writing to thank them.
