Shrewsbury Railway Station in line for £200,000 revamp

Arriva Trains Wales has tabled an ambitious scheme which includes expanding passenger waiting rooms and modernising the grade II-listed building.

The customer information office, which houses the station's CCTV equipment, will also be moved to the top of the stairs between platforms 4 and 7.

It means the current building will be part-demolished to make way for the new waiting rooms.

But rail bosses pledged that 'no disruption' would be caused to train services.

Funding has been secured through the National Stations Improvement Programme (NSIP). If the proposals are approved by Shropshire Council the work could start this summer.

A spokeswoman for Arriva Trains Wales said today: "The improvements planned at Shrewsbury Station involve the switching over of the existing waiting room and customer information office on platform 4/7.

"This will result in a larger waiting room area and a more prominent location for staff to provide customer service."

She added: "There is unlikely to be any disruption to train services while this improvement work takes place, however we will endeavour to reduce any inconvenience to passengers as a result of works being carried out at the station."

Lynne Milligan, customer services director for Arriva Trains Wales, said: "The NSIP has already delivered many customer enhancements to station facilities across the network and the improvements at Shrewsbury will make the station more customer-friendly by relocating and enhancing some of the facilities there.

"Our customers tell us how important stations are to their journey experience and we are pleased to be part of the delivery project in improving them."

It comes as a £1.5 million bid to enhance Shrewsbury's 'northern gateway' and improve access to the town ended on Tuesday. Work included upgrading pavements, cyclepaths and crossings, and improving traffic flows at Chester Street, Cross Street, Castle Foregate and Howard Street.
