Massive delivery for new Telford factory
One of the biggest industrial developments in Shropshire in years took a big step forward today with the delivery of a massive piece of machinery.
After a cross-European journey, the biggest die-casting machine in Britain was due at Magna International's new factory on the T54 Business Park in Telford this morning.
A massive 96-wheel, 16-axle lorry was due at the new factory site near Junction 4 of the M54 to deliver the machine.
It has been transported from Switzerland where it was manufactured and landed in Hull after an overnight crossing from Rotterdam over the weekend.
The colossal machine – and the similarly massive vehicle which is carrying it – has since been heading down the M1 and back up the M6 and M54 to get it to Telford.
Die casting involves making metal products by pouring moulten materials into a mould. The new Magna factory is being built to provide aluminium castings for Jaguar Land Rover's assembly plant in Castle Bromwich.
Cosma, a subsidiary of Canadian car parts giant Magna, was revealed as the company behind plans for the new factory on T54 almost a year ago, and since then the 225,000 sq ft factory has taken shape quickly.
Once completed it will provide work for about 300 people.
Production is expected to begin next year, and the site, which Magna now owns outright, is expected to provide a catalyst for further investment in the UK.
Magna is one the world's largest automotive suppliers and has 152,000 employees in 29 countries. In 2015 it took over another Shropshire company, Stadco, which also supplies parts to JLR.
